Samsung Electronics PLP production line to be applied for the first time. Samsung Electronics is knocking on the semiconductor division.

Samsung SDS is aiming at the semiconductor manufacturing logistics platform business.

It is Samsung SDS's new business in the field of smart factory service to bundle its wafer transfer control software technology and logistics equipment together to supply to semiconductor manufacturers. Because Samsung SDS will supply logistics and transportation equipment directly to customers such as Samsung Electronics, it is expected to greatly benefit the expansion of the company size.

However, the major equipment companies that deal with Samsung Electronics are worried that their sales may be reduced if Samsung SDS's business enters full-scale transaction.

According to the industry on December 12th, Samsung SDS is currently trying to supply such a semiconductor manufacturing logistics platform to Samsung Electro-Mechanics Semiconductor Division. Samsung SDS has already supplied its platform to the panel-level package (PLP) production line that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has established in Cheonan. If Samsung Electronics expands its PLP line, it is likely that Samsung SDS will supply more platforms. An industry official explained, "Samsung SDS is also in contact with Samsung Electronics based on their supply history with Samsung Electro-Mechanics."

Samsung SDS's manufacturing logistics platform consists of the proprietary wafer transfer control software, equipment front end module (EFEM), and transfer module. EFEM is a device that has two to four load port modules (LPM) that open and close the door of a FOUP that holds wafers. It is emphasized by Samsung SDS that it is possible to improve the efficiency between the chamber where the wafer is processed by platform and the overhead transport (OHT) that moves the FOUP to each process equipment. Samsung SDS made the OHT control software that Semes supplied to Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek 1 line.

The equipment industry is closely watching for Samsung SDS’s next move. EFEM and others were procured by the equipment makers producing deposition and etching chambers and were supplied to semiconductor manufacturers. However, if Samsung SDS takes over this area, the officials explain that their sales will inevitably be reduced.

Meanwhile, the Samsung SDS Smart Factory Division, which oversees this business, is increasing its sales volume each year. The sales of the Smart Factory Division, which posted sales of 800 billion won last year, are expected to exceed 1 trillion won this year. Lee Jae-Chul, Director of Samsung SDS Smart Factory business, was promoted to executive vice president.
