Chinese TV maker TCL said that claimed the No. 1 position in the US TV market in March this year, citing US market research firm NPD's data. The IHS market research, which is often mainly discussed in the industry, has not been released. In the last year's overall TV sales rank, TCL claimed the second place, according to the market research data. The data and the IHS market data differed by about 11 million units.
During the keynote speech at the '2019 UHD(4K/8K) Industry World Conference' held in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, on the 9th, TCL chairman Li Dongsheng said, "For the first time, we have claimed the No. 1 position in the US TV market based on sales volume. We have reached historic achievement as a consumer electronics brand in China."
According to the NPD data, China's TCL's TV sales in the US market in March were 638,324 units, slightly ahead of Samsung Electronics (630,888 units) with the difference of about 200 units. They were followed by VIZIO (430,000 units) and LG Electronics (350,000 units).
"In the North American market, including the US, Samsung Electronics has maintained its number one position in terms of annual volume and market share based on revenues," said a Samsung official. "Through research, it was discovered that TCL's market share in North America last year had been on a downward trend. It is doubtful that TLC could climb to be the No. 1 based on this trend," he added.
According to the US market research firm IHS's market data, Samsung Electronics accounted for 23.8% of sales volume in the North American TV market last year and 37.5% in terms of revenue, showing significant gap with VIZIO (13.9%), the number two in sales volume, and LG Electronics (19.0%), the number two in revenue. The revenue of Samsung Electronics was about five times that of TCL. TCL's share of the North American market in the first quarter to the fourth quarter of last year has been decreasing from 16%, 12%, 13%, then to 11%.
TCL Electronics, in charge of the set business in the TCL group, announced this year's first quarter results and announced, "TV sales in the North American market increased by 112% compared to the same period last year." In the first quarter of last year, the TV sales ranking released by the IHS Market in the North American TV market was in the order of Samsung Electronics (2 million units), TCL (1.14 million units), VIZIO (101 million units), and LG Electronics (9 million units).
If the TV sales of TLC in North America have more than doubled from the same period last year as mentioned by TLC, it is not impossible that it outperformed Samsung Electronics in terms of sales volume as well. TCL Electronics is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Another domestic TV maker official in Korea said, "The second quarter data of the IHS markets, often quoted by the industry, is known to not yet be counted. The first quarter data, including March, is expected to be released later this month."
TCL said it sold 28.6 million TVs last year in its annual business report. Also, it mentioned that the number increased by 23.1% from the previous year. According to Sigmaintell, a Chinese market research company, TLC recorded a market share of 11.6% in terms of sales volume, being ranked as No. 2.
Sigmaintell counted the total TV shipments in 2018 to be 239.8 million units. Listing the TV makers, it was in the order of Samsung Electronics (39.9 million units), TCL (27.8 million units), LG Electronics (27.1 million units), Chinese Hisense (16.77 million units), and Japan Sony (11.54 million units). For TCL, the sales volume released by the company itself and the survey results do not exhibit any significant difference.
On the other hand, the IHS Markets said that TCL's TV shipments last year were 17.7 million units, which ranked in the third place with 8% market share. The difference between the sales volume released by TLC and the research results was about 11 million units. By the manufacturer, the recorded sales volume was in the order of Samsung Electronics (41.38 million units), LG Electronics (27.08 million units), TCL (17.7 million units), Hisense (15.94 million units), and Sony (11.69 million units). The total amount of TV shipments was 220.135 million units.
