Samsung Electronics announced on the 14th that it plans to release a complementary product that will eliminate the risk of issues in the 'Galaxy Fold', a foldable phone, later this month.
The Long-term Evolution (LTE) model for the North American market launch will be released this month, and the 5G model planned for the domestic market will be released in June. However, the launch schedule for North America may be slightly delayed due to local factors like radio frequency certification.
Protective film issues and foreign matter infiltration in the hinge area, which had been raised by the US media in April, are said to have been completely resolved.
The edge of the protective film on the hard coated transparent polyimide (PI) cover window was inserted into the body so that users will be unable to peel it off with a fingernail. The Galaxy Fold, in its original release state, had a thin gap when the fingers touched the area between the screen frame and the protective film.
Users may have picked at this gap with their fingernails and removed the protective film. When that happens, pressure can be applied to the panel, damaging the screen.
Initially, Samsung Electronics made such a gap by considering after-sales service (AS). When an issue happens, they tried to replace only the film. However, as it was confirmed that the user can try to pull out the film by force, the plan has been changed to replacing the entire panel during AS. This is likely to decrease profitability considering the price of the organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel that exceeds $300. However, it is thought that this option is better than having a controversy over the product quality.
Some critics have expressed the sentiment of, "if it is a simple protective film, why don’t they just remove it entirely?" However, experts say the film has a new feature that increases visibility in addition to protection against fingerprints, it cannot be easily removed. The film is made of the polyester rayon (PET) fabric provided by SKC. SEGYUNG HITECH, the primary supplier, supplies the fabric after hard coating and anti-fingerprint coating processing to Samsung Electronics. When the film is being attached on the transparent PI, transparent adhesive film (OCA) of Samsung SDI is used.
The problem of foreign matter getting into the gap of the hinge area is said to have been solved by minimizing the exposed area to prevent the inflow of dust or other foreign matters.
Samsung Electronics plans to put more "Caution” notes its new Galaxy Fold product box than the initial product that warns users to refrain from doing something that could damage the product.
On the other hand, top 10 executives including Choi Yoon-Ho, Samsung Electronics Vice President of Business Support Task Force (TF), CEO Dong-Jin Goh, CEO of IT mobile division (IM), and Tae-Moon Noh, Head of Development of IM Field Wireless Division had a meeting in relation to the relaunch of Galaxy Fold. It was reported that the meeting started at 7 pm and ended around 11 pm.
