Official announcement in its quarterly report

Samsung Electronics has formalized acquiring Corephotonics, an Israeli multi-camera solution company.

According to the quarterly report released on the 15th, Corephotonics was incorporated into Samsung Electronics as a subsidiary. In January, a local media source in Israel reported that Samsung Electronics acquired Corephotonics and Samsung Electronics formalized it. The acquisition amount, announced at the time, was $155 million (about 175 billion won).

Corephotonics has hardware and software multi-camera technologies, and it was founded in 2012 by Professor David Mendlovic of Tel Aviv University.

The multi-camera hardware technology of Corephotonics is based on 'slimming'. It has exceeded the structural limitation of increasing the height of the camera module when zoom functionality is implemented. It can get rid of the protruding camera (a camera module that protrudes from the back of the smartphone). The company also has the technology to place the lens in a periscope structure, slimming the module. It also has optical image stabilization (OIS) technology that can be used in this structure and autofocus structure technology utilizing voice coil motor (VCM). In addition, it has the technology that increases or decreases the image smoothly at the same level as the optical type when using the zoom function, depth measurement, and software image synthesis.

The company's technological capability is highly regarded in the field of multi-camera utilization. Corephotonics sued Apple in the US court in 2017, saying that Apple, the iPhone maker, had unlawfully used four of its patented technologies. It also sent a warning letter to China Huawei that the company should not steal the patented technology. Samsung Venture Investment invested $15 million in Corephotonics with Foxconn and MediaTek of Taiwan in early 2017. Since the Galaxy Note 8 was released in September 2017, the company’s technology has been integrated into Samsung Electronics' smartphone dual camera.

As Corephotonics is incorporated as a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, experts believe that active collaboration with the sensor business team of Samsung Electronics' System LSI division, which conducts image sensor business in device solution (DS), will be pursued. It can serve as a 'solution provider' covering all the sensor and module technologies. Samsung Electronics' Sensor Business Team will be able to supply not only a simple image sensor but also a multi-camera module as a turn-key to customers. There is also the possibility of new customers even when existing Corephotonics customers were not using Samsung's image sensors.

At the ‘Image Sensor Presentation’ held at the Press Center of Samsung Electronics last 9th, Park Yong-In, Director of Sensor Business Team of System LSI Business Division at Samsung Electronics said, “(Samsung Electronics) said that it achieve the top position in system semiconductor by 2030. We (image sensors) want to achieve that faster."
