Critics question significance of US display societies

Samsung Display failed to run a booth at this year’s Display Week conference organized by Society of Information Display(SID) in San Jose earlier this month. Some say the display-maker may forgo the event next year as well.

Booth location was the main cause for Samsung’s reticence, they noted.

“Until now, Samsung Display and LG Display had nabbed the best seats in the house, but this year, they went to China’s BOE,” said several sources in the local display industry and academia on May 29.

As a result, Samsung Display CEO Lee Dong-hoon decided to boycott the conference altogether, they said.

The Samsung Display CEO appears to have decided that as world’s largest display maker in terms of sales touting cutting-edge technology in small and mid-sized OLED panels, the display maker won’t be made a fool of by SID.

Market watchers therefore believe Samsung Display may forgo next year’s conference as well.

“The Wall,” a micro-LED display that received the Display of the Year award at the event, was the work of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Department, and not Samsung Display.

According to members of academia, booth location at Display Week is based on multiple criteria including event participation. “The size of the sponsorship is not the only deciding factor,” said one industry watcher.

This means Samsung Display may not have actively participated in past SID events as desired.

In the meantime, Chinese display makers shined at this year’s conference.

BOE showcased a 0.39-inch micro OLED with a 5644 pixels per inch(PPI) picture resolution.

Micro-OLED displays consist of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming the individual pixel elements and are said to have improved contrast, response times, and energy efficiency.

Semiconductor Energy Laboratory, a Japan-based R&D firm, revealed an even smaller 0.28-inch panel with a PPI of 5291.

From South Korea, LG Display exhibited a 0.66-inch panel with a 3500 PPI, while other display makers’ resolution was in the 2000 PPI range.

Critics questioned on how much significance should be attached to US-based display events.

“I wonder if we need to be so focused on a conference held in a country that doesn’t even have mass display production facilities, especially when there are similar societies right here in Korea where it has world-leading display ecosystems,” said one participant of this year’s Display Week.

The Korean Information Display Society celebrates its 20th year anniversary this year. It was created 37 years later than SID, which was launched in 1962.
