Kolon Industries on Dec. 24 displayed new components for hydrogen-fueled cars at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Hydrogen Energy Network’s hydrogen charging station in Sejong Government Complex in a move indicating its expansion into the sector.
Hydrogen Energy Network is a special purpose company launched in March this year with 13 hydrogen-related companies including Kolon Industries, Hyundai Motor and the Korea National Gas Corp. taking part. The network is aiming to set up and run up to 100 charging stations by 2022 in tandem with government plans to supply an accumulated 67,000 hydrogen cars by then.
One of Kolon’s key technology involves a humidity control device that helps improve the efficiency of the fuel cells. The device can also eliminate fine dust in the air; running 10,000 hydrogen cars can filter the air polluted by 20,000 diesel cars.
Kolon Industries is currently ramping up production by three times its original plans on government policies to expand hydrogen cars. The humidity control devices will be supplied to Hyundai Motor based on a technology partnership. The goal is to take up to 50% of the global market by 2025.
Kolon is also stepping up development of MEA. In 2014, the company set up an MEA pilot production facility in Magok’s One&Only Tower. It is now preparing to mass produce.
