Samsung Electronics has set up a new business team to catch up with Sony (Japan), the world’s #1 company in the CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) industry.

According to industry sources, Samsung Electronics Device Solution (DS) sector had recently set up a new ‘Sensor Business Team’ within the System LSI Business Department to focus on the CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) business. Park Yong-In, head of the LSI Development Division (Researcher, Executive Vice President), will be in charge of the business team. Park EVP had recently been focusing on developing sensor products before taking charge of the newly introduced team.

Park EVP was previously the CEO of Dongbu HiTek. He was brought into the System LSI Business Department of Samsung Electronics at the first half of 2014 as an Executive Director. Before his time at Dongbu HiTek, he served as the Director of the Analog Group in LG Semiconductors (1987~1999) and also spent time as a Business Manager at Texas Instruments (1999~2006).

The CIS product planning team and sales organizations are also housed within the Sensor Business Team. It is known that Kim Ki-Nam, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, has formed an independent sensor business team that consists of product planners and salespersons from the System LSI Business Department and gave the authority to control the team along with responsibilities (revenue) to EVP Park. However, the Foundry Business Department, which is led by President Chung Eun-Seung, still has the investment and development rights related to production.

According to the market research company Techno Systems Research (TSR), last year’s global CIS market has amounted to 13.2 trillion KRW (11.69 billion USD). Sony recorded revenue of 6.8 trillion KRW (6.01 billion USD), topping the market with a share of 51.4%. Samsung Electronics had remained in 2nd place with a revenue of 2.75 trillion KRW (2.45 billion USD), recording a market share of 20.9%.

Samsung Electronics is expanding its CIS business to various fields such as the mobile and automobile sectors. Recently, they were able to supply their CIS to Tesla, a U.S electric automobile manufacturer (Related Article: Samsung Electronics, supplying image sensors for cars to the U.S company Tesla for the first time) This is considered to be a meaningful milestone, since it was the first time that Samsung Electronics had supplied their CIS to an automobile company, indicating that they are expanding their business to a new industry.

There are also many analyses regarding the fact that the new team is named ‘Sensor Business Team’ rather than limiting its boundaries to CIS.

One industry insider stated that “As we face the IoT(Internet of Things) era, CIS business is definitely going to expand its domains, and the Sensor Business Team is bound to take charge of new business areas that utilize sensors such as fingerprint recognition and healthcare.”
